Relations of Hard of Hearing persons and hearing health professionals in light of the new hearing technologies

There are Hard Of Hearing persons who like to control their hearing aids features and abilities. There are HOH persons who just want it to work without touching it. Hearing health professional should maintain good relations with both HOH groups. This presentation will articulate the needs of the first group and the options of the hearing aids professional. For example, multiple dedicated programs in the hearing aid, activated telecoil, Bluetooth connectivity with the smartphone, Assistive Listening Devices, etc. The session will discuss the new wave of new wireless communication between the smartphone and the hearing aid, which gives the hearing aid user much more options to hear more sources of sound, hopefully, with better hearing and better understanding. The session will discuss how much the HOH person should be allowed to control the hearing aid. Especially in light of the new wave of digital wireless communication, that enables connectivity with the smartphone, low cost quality remote microphone, and other interesting applications of digital communications, that enable more and more control to the HOH person. A question to discuss will be who will draw the line between professional-fitting and user-setting of the hearing aids. Finally, the session will close with a discussion about the implications of the connection of hearing aids to smartphones in developing countries. The view will be offered that the easy control of the hearing aids through the smartphone and the low cost ALS enabled by the smartphone will have an impact on the role of the hearing health professional especially in these countries.
