Humanitarian Audiology in Developed Countries

In the developed countries, even those having well-established public services, segments of the population live under poor conditions and at risk of social exclusion. The Canarian Community National rehabilitation programmer for hearing loss is far more focused on the childhood population that on older subjects group with hearing disabilities. Yet, the Canary Islands have a population of 283.114 persons older than 65 years. Of these older persons, 29.726 (10,5 % of the total population above 65 years) have little or no personal autonomy, have some type of disability, and have some form of social dependence. The persons described in this presentation were selected based in their having a hearing loss disability, being older than 64 years, and possessing little financial means. Following these requisites, social workers of several council municipalities of the island of Tenerife identified 45 persons during the period January 2014 through November 2014. These 45 persons were sent for ear examination and audiological assessment. Of the total number of persons examined, 35 were selected for hearing aid fitting based in the auditory thresholds and audiological and otological features. The aim of this study is threefold: 1) to establish the hearing status of this group of subjects and its audiological handicap. 2) to assess the audiological handicap changes after the hearing aid fitting, and 3) to discuss the networking for the action taken in this project.

Dr. Barajas studied medicine at the Medical School of Navarra University. After a few years working in the United Kingdom, he obtained the Diploma in Laryngology and Otology from The Royal College of Surgeons. (London). He qualified as otolaryngologist at Madrid University and took his Ph.D. at Granada University. He spent several years in Madrid at Clínica del Trabajo. He received a Fulbright fellowship to study Auditory Physiology Laboratory at UCLA (USA).He was awarded by the Spanish and USA Commission to purse his academic and clinical training at the Foundation of Otology of Los Angeles, California,( USA) and Cincinnati University (USA) He worked at the University Hospital in Odense, Denmark. Dr. Barajas as fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung worked at the Neurology Department o University of Ulm (Germany). Professor at the University of La Laguna (Canary Islands) (Spain) and ENT consultant at Spanish National Health. Dr Barajas is a dedicated contributor in Audiology and in the Electrophysiology of the Auditory System, fields in which he has published numerous articles in the main International journal and book chapters. He belongs to the editorial board of several International Publications.. He is a regular worldwide speaker delivering lectures at different International Congress, Courses and Seminars. Dr Barajas has been Organizer and President of several International Congress: IV International Congress of Audiological Medicine (1987), International Congress of Audiology (1990) The European workshop on Suppression of Otoacoustics Emissions (1994). XVIII Biennial International Symposium of the International Evoked Responses Audiometric Study Group (IERASG) (2003). European Congress of Audiological Societies. (2009) He is the designer and current President of the Canary Island Foundation for Prevention of deafness Dr Barajas. Director for Spain of the Special Olympics Programme of Healthy Hearing (2003).Appreciation Award of the Special Olympics World Winter Games. Nagano Japan (2005) and World Summer Games. Athens Greece (2011) He carried out clinical and training work at the Foundation Totaí (Bolivia) and at Ouadagoudu Burquina Faso. Annual Speaker at Hearing International Meeting and active participant in Worldwide Humanitarian Audiology Meetings. Member of the workshop on the Provision of Hearing aids and Services for developing countries at The World Health Organization. Geneva. Switzerland. Dr Barajas has been in Executive Board of the International Society of Audiology, European Federation of Audiological Societies, The Mediterranean Society of Audiology and Otology. Honorary member of the Italian and Spanish Society of Audiology and Phoniatrics. President of the Association of Physician in Audiology (2002 – 2006) .President of International Society of Audiology.
