Ear Care Day in Indonesia

Ear Care Day (ECD) in Indonesia was first launched by the Ministry of Health together with the Indonesian National Committee on Prevention & Management of Deafness & Hearing Loss and the Indonesian ORL Society on the 3rd March 2010. The activity took place in an elementary school in Rawasari, an ear screening to clean earwax was also performed. Starting from that year, the ECD was celebrated every year by the National as well as Local Committees and became extended more each year. The ECD in 2013, activities performed in many cities in Indonesia. In Jakarta it was held in two places, in Hyatt Hotel where the JiFESS Congress attended by 400 participants conducted, lecture regarding Ear & Hearing Care programs as well as about Sound Hearing 2030 were presented. Through an exhibition booth, posters, leaflets and promotional merchandise such as keychains, T shirts, mugs, and stickers were distributed. The second place held at the Ministry of Health in Jakarta, consisting of deminar, hearing screening for the employees and dancing performance by students of the special school for the Deaf. In ECD in 2014, we performed an Ear Clean Week, ci=onsiste of 1) a simultaneus screening and cleaning earwax done by most local committees in Indonesia for the elementary schools; 2) Survey in Vocational Schools that included of socialization, measuring noise in its workshop’s places, students hearing screening as well as donation of hearing protection; 3) Seminar on the ear & hearing care for the PHC Doctors with Ear kit donation; 4) Competition of Public Education Video concerning 5 Diseases causing Hearing Loss & Deafness; 5) Charity Tympanomastoidectomy surgery; 6) Promotional Fun Walk and Car Free Day; 7) The Indonesian Jolene was made, and were named Genta & Mahesa. In 2015 the activities were mostly noise awareness and hearing screening and management for the Elderly, centered in South Celebes (North Toraja and Palopo), Bali and Papua.. . The main activity for this year’s ECD in accordance to WHO program, a Roadshow of Seminar & Workshops on Management of Deafness in Newborn Babies for Midwifes & PHC Doctors, performed in many provinces. In this year. The North Toraja District was launched as the first Healthy Ear District in Indonesia. Although the main setback was difficulty in funding and distance, it is hoped that many more District Committees will be launched in the next years in cooperation with the local officials, and therewith flourishing of sustainable ear and hearing care activities throughout the country.
