Topic: Effect of the Starkey Hearing Foundation Phase 4 intervention On Speech and Audition on Pupils Living with Hearing Impairment in Kochi; A Quasi Controlled trial

Context: The Starkey Hearing Foundation observed that most parents and teachers for the hearing impaired in low to middle-income countries do not use speech in the classrooms or homes (total communication strategy) and that could prevent the pupils from developing speech and audition or make them lose it if they developed it. Objective: To assess the impact of the Starkey Hearing Foundation Phase 4 intervention on the speech and audition of pupils living with hearing impairment Design: A quasi-controlled trial of children living with hearing impairment in India where schools were assigned to interventional or control groups Method: The total number of participants included in the study was 89. Of these, 47 were part of the intervention group, and 42 were part of the control group, and both groups had similar participants. Children tested were aged 4- 13 years. Children with cochlear implants were excluded from this study.” The Progress of audition and speech monitored and documented weekly. Interventions: Children in the intervention group received the Starkey Hearing Foundation hearing aids, their teachers and parents were trained and supervised to inculcate the culture of listening and speaking to the children both in class and at home while the control group received only hearing aids. The intervention took a period of 6 months. Main Outcomes Measures: Ling 6 sounds identification and detection; Word identification and detection, vowels, consonants and diphthongs for speech Results: For the audition, the result of a paired t-test revealed 8.09% increase (CI 4.9%-11.3% P?0.005), but the control group did not show any statistically significant difference. For the speech evaluation, a difference in difference paired t-test revealed statistically significant difference in the diphthong test (P?0.05) Conclusion: Overall, the Starkey Hearing Foundation, and the result indicates the Starkey Hearing Foundation Phase 4 program can increase audition and speech of children living with hearing impairment
