Strategic Global Application of Core Competencies in Audiology

The practice of audiology has undergone a lot of change in the past thirty years. Frontiers of new knowledge in audiology and hearing sciences are continuously challenged by scientific advancements. Clinical practice guidelines for audiologic services are generally developed by regulatory bodies and professional organizations and include recommendations to improve provision of care and patient outcomes. The domain of core competencies for providing clinical services recognizes the requisite knowledge and expertise to identify and categorize hearing impairment using current scientific tools and technologies. However, in regions of the world that are constrained by resources there are limitations to application of these competencies due to available tools and technologies. Although the hearing care needs of those with hearing impairments do not vary across regions, sadly, accessible resources do. Audiology training models define core-competencies based on the required knowledge and skills for acceptable levels of practices. Currently, there are no guidelines for adapting the requisite core competencies to resource-limited settings. This is particularly important because a significant part of audiology training includes advanced technology for diagnostic and rehabilitative clinical service delivery with prohibitive price tags in many regions of the world. We propose that, utilizing a continuum of standards that have relevance to the geographical context of the region, published core competencies in audiology can be modified and adapted without compromising the quality of care offered. Our presentation proposes to review recommended core competencies from a practical standpoint. We will encourage clinicians worldwide to challenge their clinical skills and proficiency at every stage of clinical delivery. We'll also direct audiologists to resources that can optimize patient care in low-resource regions of the world. Finally, we will propose ways to adapt and integrate the continuum of core competencies so that clinicians can provide appropriate hearing health-care without compromising the accuracy of diagnosis and rehabilitation.

Dr. Girija Sundar is Director of Distance Education and Assistant Professor, Salus University Osborne College of Audiology (OCA) in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. Dr. Sundar is responsible for the Distance Education initiatives including Advanced Studies Certificate Programs, the second generation online AuD-Bridge degree Program for audiologists in the USA and international audiology community and International Hybrid MSc in Clinical Audiology Program. In her current capacity, she is responsible for developing academic programs for practicing clinicians across the world. Dr, Sundar had a clinical practice in Audiology and Hearing aids for over 25 years in Northern New Jersey. Dr. Sundar’s worked as director of business development for Starkey International and was based in India for three years from 2006. Dr. Sundar was awarded a PhD and MPhil in Hearing Sciences from City University of New York, M.S. in Communication Disorders/Audiology and B.S. degree in Speech Pathology from William Patterson College, Wayne, NJ

James Hall (POC,Primary Presenter), Salus University,;
James W. Hall III, PhD is an internationally recognized audiologist with 40-years of clinical, teaching, research, and administrative experience. He received his Bachelor's degree in Biology from American International University, his Master's degree in Speech Pathology from Northwestern University, and his Ph.D. in audiology from Baylor College of Medicine under the direction of James Jerger. Dr. Hall has held clinical and academic positions at major medical centers and leadership roles in the American Academy of Audiology. He is the author of over 190 peer-reviewed publications, invited articles, book chapters and also 10 textbooks. Clinical and research interests include early diagnosis of infant hearing loss, auditory processing disorders, tinnitus, best practices, and audiology applications of tele-health. Dr. Hall holds academic appointments as Professor (part-time) at Salus University and the University of Hawaii, a position as Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria South Africa.
