The Question Prompt List (QPL): An International Tool to Ensure Family-Centered Conversations

This presentation will highlight a project that was produced by parents, audiologists and researchers resulting in the development of a “Question Prompt List” (QPL) that can be used by audiologists to encourage families to engage in both fact-based and adjustment-based questions during audiology appointments. Question Prompt Lists resemble Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) information sheets, but focus on asking questions, not providing answers. QPLs are communication aids created to encourage patients and families to actively participate in discussions, by inviting them to choose the questions(s) they would like to discuss at any given appointment. The impetus for developing this QPL was to facilitate more family-centered practices in early intervention. The hope is that audiologists will also use the list to prepare themselves to answer questions that families ask. The questions on the list are organized by topic. (e.g Our Child’s Diagnosis; Family Concerns; Management of Devices; Support Systems, Now and in the Future) This tool has been translated into five languages and may be useful for audiological missions, to ensure the holistic needs of families are met.

  • 1. The learner will be able to discuss the value of the Parent Question Prompt List and basic questions that parents ask during appointments.
  • 2. The learner will be able to apply strategies to maximize encounters with families to ensure priorities of patients are met in a limited amount of time.
