A Successful Humanitarian Trip Requires a Great Partnership

You’re excited about the prospects of doing your own humanitarian trip. There are so many underserved populations throughout the world and your desire to help change lives is powerful. Before you begin to get your supplies (hearing aids, earmold materials etc.), before you start rounding up volunteers (audiologists, helpers, physicians etc.), before you obtain the necessary equipment (portable audiometry, real ear equipment etc.), you need a partner on the ground. Finding the partner and vetting that relationship that will either make or break your efforts towards providing sustainable hearing healthcare to that country or region or town. It starts with a shared vision, common values, and a clear idea of the relationship that is mutually respectful and supportive. This course will discuss a vetting process as an example of what can be used to ensure a great partnership that will ultimately lead to the region being able to operate without your help in the future. Pitfalls to watch out for will also be discussed.

• Participants will be able to cite the pitfalls that can result in a doomed partnership

Sandy Riley is Director of Operations for Entheos Audiology Cooperative. She has organized over 25 humanitarian trips in 9 different regions of the world over the past 5 years. Sandy is responsible for organizing volunteers, overseeing preparation of equipment, hearing devices and needed materials for each trip. She is also responsible for partnership development. Sandy has been involved in all aspects of running a smooth operation by working closely with partners to ensure a successful experience by patients and volunteers. This includes transportation, housing and food for volunteers as well as helping to ensure that the patient population is adequately defined.

Laurel Gregory holds a Master’s degree in audiology and has been working the field of audiology for over 25 years. Her past work experience include private practice audiologist, research audiologist, Manager of Clinical Research for ReSound and Starkey, and Director of Product Management for Starkey, and Chief Engagement Officer of Skafold, LLC. Currently Laurel is the Director of Training and Development for Entheos Audiology Cooperative. Entheos has been conducting trips for 5 years in various countries around the world.

Nimet Adam (Co-Presenter), Hearing Partners of South Florida, dr.adam@myhearingpartners.com;
Nimet Adam received her Doctor of Audiology degree from the University of Florida. She established a private practice, Hearing Partners of South Florida, in 1999 and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Entheos Audiology Cooperative. Dr. Adam has participated in numerous humanitarian trips to Guatemala, Ecuador, Jordan, West Bank, South America, Zambia and Mozambique with Entheos Audiology Cooperative and Hearing The Call. She has also organized and lead her own humanitarian trip to Mozambique. Dr. Adam is passionate about setting up best practice protocols for audiologists and volunteers on humanitarian trips and ensuring that the right data is collected.
