The development of early detection and intervention using a multidisciplinary team approach in Fiji.

Fiji has no formal training programs for audiology, speech and language pathology, occupational therapy. Early childhood education training is also a fairly new field. Despite this the Frank Hilton Organization(FHO) in 2014 began to develop a multidisciplinary approach to early detection and intervention in Fiji as the education system was moving towards inclusive education yet no steps had been taken to provide early intervention or early childhood development programs (0-2yrs) or early childhood education programs for children with disabilities within the health or education sectors. FHO provides the only early intervention program in Fiji and have now developed a team of professionals from different disciplines that work together on the assessment and planning of individual learning programs for children with various challenges including hearing impairment. This paper talks will describe some of the key features in the development of this program, as well as some of the lessons learnt and some of the challenges still being faced for the development of the program.

  • Developing a multidisciplinary team in countries where there are few professionals
  • Audiology assessment as a part of the multidisciplinary team in the assessment of children with multiple disabilities
  • Importance of capacity building and local team empowerment
