ALL HEAR: Philippine National Ear Institute's VISION FOR HEARING THE FUTURE

From its humble beginnings as the Ear Study Group in 1987, the Philippine National Ear Institute has been recognized as the best study group at University of the Philippines Manila. The University of the Philippines Board of Regents approved creation of the Ear Institute in 2001. Legislative efforts bore fruit with the passage of Republic Act 9245, creating the Philippine National Ear Institute in 2004 in the University of the Philippines Manila. The main mission of the Institute is provision of an ideal environment for comprehensive and integrated studies on hearing, balance, and communication disorders relevant to Philippine conditions. A unique arrangement whereby the PGH Ear Unit serves as the clinical laboratory for ear and balance research provides for an integrated approach with research-based training and teaching as well as health services and community outreach services. Over the years, more than 100 research undertakings, resulting in landmark publications, interagency cooperation, and international and national programmes, were initiated and developed. “ALL HEAR” sums up the accomplishments and achievements of the Philippine National Ear Institute over the last five years, meriting all efforts in the years since its inception. The presentation covers the following topics: (A) Awards and Accolades, (L) Linkages Formed and Strengthened, (L) Laboratory Services Expanded, (H) Heightened Individual and Institutional Extension Services, (E) Excellence in Resource Stewardship/Fiscal Management, (A) Academic Excellence, and (R) Research Excellence. All these have been consistent with the Institute’s Mission and its Vision that “No Filipino shall be deprived of a functioning sense of hearing and balance.”

• To promote the development of study groups and research programs, cultivating globally competitive human resource with the recognition on the importance of local and international collaboration
• To coordinate and establish partnership with other government agencies, private and non-government organizations doing related work in the surveillance and diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation of hearing and balance health/disorders;
• To ensure that the results of health research and development activities are utilized to improve the health of the people.
