Implementation Strategies for Hearing Screening(NIHS) in Nigeria: Exploring the strength in our locals

Cues from NIHS across the globe would suggest that a workable model in Nigeria would start off as a pilot NIHS project in selected Primary Health Care Center in a Local Government Maternity. The availability of various cadres of Health Assistants, Community Health Extension Workers and Nurses who can be trained in basic Hearing Screening techniques and the already established substantial patronage from majority of the populace will make the choice of Local Health Centers appropriate. The strategies will include training of Health assistants and Nursing Staff in electrophysiologic screening and documentation in a standardized form. The training which will be coordinated by a trained audiologist will also include creation of Hearing Screening Register. This hearing screening program will identify both congenital hearing loss and the High risk for acquired Hearing loss. The program will commence in three local Health centres and repeated expanded as it goes. The ultimate objectives is to create substantial data for formulation of a National policy on Hearing screening. The strength and weakness of the strategies will be discussed

  • Identify the strength in the local gorvernment health center as access to commence infant and Newborn hearing screening
  • Train the manpower in the Local Health Centers for conducting hearing screening and coordination and referral
  • To establish a data for formulation of National hearing policy in Nigeria
