Starring in Their Own Stories: Language Experience Books for Families of Children with Hearing Loss

Children with hearing loss from families with limited resources struggle to develop language commensurate with their peers with typical hearing. In fact, the literature indicates that these children often have less sophisticated language than their same aged peers with similar hearing losses from more affluent families. Early intervention, including coaching parents, has been shown to improve the outcomes for young children with hearing loss, especially those from families with lower socioeconomic backgrounds. One strategy that the professionals working with these families can utilize to teach vocabulary, language and syntax is language experience books. In this presentation, participants will explore the research that supports the use of language experience books and learn the key components of them. They will then acquire specific strategies for coaching a family with low SES, limited caregiver education and/or inadequate resources, on how to create a language experience book for their own child. Finally, participants will create a sample language experience book that can be used as an exemplar in their own practice.

• Participants will examine the existing research that supports the use of language experience books for children with hearing loss.
• Participants will be able to identify the necessary components of a language experience book.
• Participants will be able to demonstrate to families of children with hearing loss when and how to create language experience books.

Melissa Jensen, M.A. CED is a Deaf Educator at Carle Auditory Oral School and currently teaches in the Early Start Preschool program. She received her undergraduate degree in Deaf Education and her Master’s Degree in Early Intervention in Deaf Education from Fontbonne University in St. Louis, MO. She is a credentialed Early Intervention Specialist (Developmental Therapist, Hearing) and is a certified Teacher of the Deaf in Illinois and Missouri. Melissa currently serves as president of the Illinois chapter of AG Bell. She is also the parent of a daughter with bilateral cochlear implants whose only trouble hearing these days is because she is 14!
