Preventive Audiology Hearing Services in Nigeria

The latest statistics by W.H.O indicated that hearing loss is on the ascendancy across the world. According to the W.H.O data, Nigeria recorded an increase in the last ten years from 6.5 to 8.5 million, though this figure is believed to be a conservative estimate. Preventive audiological services holds the key to reducing the upsurge of hearing loss menace in this country. This paper highlights the existing audiological practices geared towards prevention and care of hearing loss in Nigeria. The problems and challenges bedeviling such preventive audiology programs are also highlighted. In conclusion, the paper suggests recommendations to strengthen existing hearing healthcare practices while drumming in the urgency of making prevention an integral part of routine audiologic hearing care delivery in Nigeria.
